Guidance for displaying ads based on Groups/Taxonomies

If anyone could help me understand how to do this I would appreciate it.

I have 15 ad groups that make up a vocabulary that is connected to both the ad content type and a content profile. Users can select taxoonomy terms based on their interests and ads can be tagged with the matching ad groups to determine what categories ads belong to. Simple enough.

My problem is in getting a view to display ads in a block based on the selected Term IDs that the logged in user has selected on their content profile. It seems I am having trouble finding the right formula to create a view that will do this correctly.

I am choosing an advertisement view, and selecting filters node type:advertisement and ad:activated:true. Normally I would look to create a relationship to the content profile content type but it is unavailable.

I need a view that will match the ads displayed by their selected categories with the logged in user and the interests they have selected.

Can anyone give me a push in the right direction?
