New not going away after viewing

The "new" label doesn't seem to go away after users have viewed the node.

Sorry, now I realize it's not a bug, just a UI confusion.
This use of "new" is inconsistent with the usual drupal use of "new" flags in trackers, views, etc, where it means "unread" for the current user. It would be nice if there was an admin option to either changes this to the Mediawiki-ish "N" or hide it.... An "unread" flag would also be nice.
