Hi,
I have just started to play with Drupal allot lately (6-8hours a night, trying to master it) and have created a website http://www.wcfree.com. The goal is to create a site that will be able to compete with facebook, myspace etc...(I know the look needs allot of work lol) My goal with this project is not for money (there is AdSense to pay for hosting etc...) instead I just want to push Drupal to the limits and see what it can do. Find out how many members it would take to crack the frame work; with file, music and video uploads. Plus all the content members can through at it. (IE: Can Drupal handle 6 billion members online actively using the site at any giving time? I suggest we find out) On top of that try to come up with and develop new modules that will help automate most of the monitoring process so restrictions are enforced.
Just wondering if I can get some input from the community to find out if I am going in the right direction and if you see anything that you would do differently. Check out the current site http://www.wcfree.com

PS: This is allot of work for one person so if anyone else is interested in helping out let me know. I have noticed that there is a bucket load of members in the community who all want to develop this type of site but maybe we should all work together to make one site. Document the hole process. Then we will have a blue print to make future websites, so new Drupal members don't have as much trouble as we once did. This will also eliminate the reinventing of the wheel which is the main reason open source has been brought to the surface. (This is only my opinion)

Since no one has thrown a comment out on this I suppose I will, being a newbie forum lurker and all.
I think I recognize your good intentions on this, but I would not join to help such a project for various reasons.
1. Everyone else here is trying to build a project that does the same thing, but they'd rather be the person at the helm, accepting whatever hassle they have to slog through to make it on their own.

Even though you might actually mean this, I would guess most people looking at this wouldn't believe it. Anyone looking at this drupal forum would be skeptical of working on any project outside of drupal.org itself since the Drupal team has already earned the trust and respect of this community. And they do it openly without advertising and with the power of the GPL.
3. There are a group of professional developers trying to make money by customizing the default drupal install to do these things. These people are not going to want to jump on sucha project if it will cut their business down.
4. People are using their knowledge of Drupal to create their unique sites, and don't want to actively compete against clones of their own site which dilute the value of their site in terms of being fresh or unique. This is something which annoyed me about the popularity of wordpress as it looks like everyone has the same blog when they use the kubrick theme, and whereas that blog might have been fresh when it was used by one person, it starts to become ugly when you see it on so many sites, simply because it makes the internet look very bland, as if there is no innovation.
5. Some people will want to be paid in a traditional employer/employee setting before they'd have the incentive to work on such a thing collaaboratively.

Your site has too "corporate" design, and IMHO, what you need is something more fancy, more attractive.
Personally, I don't like where you have placed ads, specially in user profiles - next to the user img :(
Another thing - fonts are too small.
