B&M backups keep site stuck offline sometimes

Project:Backup and Migrate
Version:6.x-2.2
Component:Miscellaneous
Category:bug report
Priority:critical
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:active

Issue Summary

I am using B&M on 2 sites, which each have their own installation of Drupal core on Dreamhost. On both sites, the B&M module has automated, scheduled backups to Amazon SSS. I also occasionally do manual backups before upgrades to the site's functionality and whatnot.

I am having multiple issues, each of which I will put in its own request. The biggest and most pressing issue is that after B&M takes a site offline using automated backups, it keeps it offline unless I manually put it back online (via Admin > Site Configuration > Site Maintenance > Online > Save Configuration). I don't think this happens every single day, but it happens about 3 out of every 4 days on each site. Backups are occurring approximately once a day on each site. It doesn't seem to occur following manual backups, on either site.

We are on D6.22 with B&M 6.x-2.4. In addition, there appear to be no major site errors or bugs in one of the sites, which has its own installation. The other site is buggy, so it is only interesting to me because it replicates the behavior.

Other modules that were installed on the non-buggy site before B&M first displayed this behavior, are as follows:

  1. Chaos Tool Suite 6.x-1.8
  2. Administration menu 6.x-1.8
  3. IMCE 6.x-2.3
  4. IMCE Wysiwyg API bridge 6.x-1.1
  5. Nice Menus 6.x-2.1
  6. jQuery Update 6.x-2.0-alpha1
  7. Wysiwyg 6.x-2.4
  8. jQuery UI 6.x-1.5
  9. Google Fonts 6.x-1.7
  10. Path redirect generate 6.x-1.0-rc2 (disabled)
  11. Path redirect 6.x-1.0-rc2
  12. Panels 6.x-3.9
  13. Views 6.x-3.0-rc3 (enabled but no views were created)

Any advice would be welcome! Thanks.

I see the same issue when I have Backup and Migrate take the site off line and I, too, need to manually put the site back online. Quick backup or timed via cron the site stays offline until I intervene. However, if I do not take the site offline, everything works fine with the backup, but cron sends out the following message an hour after the backup: "Cron channel (default) has been running for more than an 3600 secs and is most likely stuck. Last job executed: backup_migrate_cron." Not sure it the problem is cron or backup related, but cron continues to run every minute and perform its cron duties during that hour according to the log. However, the offline issue occurs only if the site is taken offline by this module.

I installed poormanscron, and it seems so far to have helped the issue. Do you have that installed?

Version:6.x-2.4» 7.x-2.4

I am having a similar issue with Drupal 7.14, B&M 7.x-2.4.

I believe "poormanscron" is now built into D7. I was running it for a while, and the problem was occurring then. I have since set it not to run, but use an external cron job. I have a very small DB (site still in the process of having content loaded), so I don't think the time it takes to execute is the problem, but potentially some other interference. I'm running two sites under shared hosting. Both sites exhibit the problem, one more than the other.

i have D7.15 and B&M 7.x.2.4 and the same occurs. the maintenance mode appears to be set time to time.
maybe it is the scheduled backup....?
is there any issue for this annoying bug ? (users can't access the site in a random way....)

Same for me even with the old version!
Around every 2 weeks randomly he stays in maintenance mode.

I have D7.16 and B&M 7.x.2.4 and the same problem, but it happens every day, so I uncheck "Take site offline" in the profile.
