The nearby towns
Barcelona is wonderful, but anyone visiting should go to Barcelona-Sants station and catch the (very inexpensive) train south and visit some of the seaside villages, where life slows down.
I spent several days in Vilanova i la Geltru. After 7 pm everyone in the town goes for a walk. Eventually they wind up on the Rambla or one of the little squares, sitting at a cafe table in the open air until 10 or so. After that the beach turns into a party with a little amusement park that runs until the wee hours of the morning.

Sitges between Barcelona and Vilanova in the South you can go there in 30 min from the center of Barcelona (Passeig gracia/Arago station) to the center of Sitges. It was the kernel of the Modernista movement and you can visit in the old area the Russinyol house and the Maricel Palace.

After that you can go to the beach and swinging in the Mediterranean sea (September is the perfect season) and later have a Paella with Catalonia fresh (of the year) white wine, sunbathing with a black - big Italian - sunglasses.
After that you can code the core of the Drupal 7.0
if not simple relax the evening with sangria or beer in the beach after to go to the discotheques at night in Barcelona preferably.

yes there are many tourists (majority of them from across the atlantic) who has been in Catalunya and enjoyed all the goodness the country offers and left the country with the the idea they have been in Spain -minus flamenco, toros i olé's and strangely that red and yellow Spanish flag has few more stips!! :)
