If you don't have panels enabled you just have http response as variant type, that's quite useless.
Panels itself provide the variant type "panels" so you can actually display something.
I'm not sure whether this is right in all cases, but i guess most people uses panels anway

swentel commentedAdded some more info to README file and on the project page. Kept the dependency on page manager and didn't add panels.
