I know I'm missing something simple, but I've tried every combination of reordering zones and regions in delta, but everything I've tried pushes the logo down since they all have to be configured to at least 12 grids.

All i'm trying to do is have the logo left, and the menu right in the header section.

I've attached a screen shot. Could someone give me their settings for for that so I can get my head around positioning using sections and zones?

To do this you don't want to be dealing with sections or zones. You want to deal with regions and blocks. If you're wanting the logo in the header section download and enable the delta module and delta blocks. Then disable your logo on in the subtheme settings and in admin/config/user-interface/delta-blocks enable the logo block. Then place the block as you would any others in the header region along with your menu and you can style via css all you want from there.
