Just want to know why is this module linking to b.scorecard.com? Also seems to be grabbing .js from another site.

This sort of thing sets alarm bells ringing as it could be doing anything!

Not sure I want to be using something like this seems a little sneaky to me.

Is that part of the deal for using this module?

Please dispel my fears and kindly do'nt alter this post.

Thanks

This module uses the ShareThis API (www.sharethis.com). The widget used is developed by ShareThis, Inc.

It loads javascript and css files from ShareThis's servers that contain the widget and sharing tools that are used in the module.

ShareThis uses the call to scorecard to track analytics on general use patterns.

As an added thought, it also makes calls to google analytics if your site is set up to use those features.

Thank you for your replies jvalencia.

They are very helpful to me. Is there anyway to not have the calls to these outside sources and have a streamlined ShareThis?

Trying to get my site zipping along as fast as possible and these extra calls are unnecessary for my site as I'm not bothered about the amount of visitors and stats etc. Just speed of site.

Many thanks

Hmm... You could save the ShareThis files locally and hack the module.

Unfortunately, when ShareThis updates their code, you would have to update yours as well. The point of using an outside library is that someone maintains it for you. For example, when twitter or facebook changes their API, ShareThis updates it so you don't have to maintain your own sharing code.

Another thought is that the site can run zippy while still making outside calls. You just want to limit the number of those calls.

For example, Thinkgeek.com uses ShareThis and runs quite nicely.

Definitely going to have to give this some more thought.

Checking with pingdom tools - Thinkgeek is amazingly quick 713k loaded with 114 requests in a little over a second!

Maybe I need to rethink my site, possibly hosting, at the mo I'm loading around 112k with 17 requests and its taking between 1 and 2 seconds.

Looking at the results there seems to be a long delay at the start of the checks on my site 0.6 seconds to loa 6k and Thinkgeek is 0.3 seconds to load 19.1k not sure why I get the hold up?

I think it may be a question for another thread.

You have been brilliant help, Many thanks jvalencia
