The http://drupal.org/project/media as a lot of advantage. For the user point a view, inserting photo (or other media) inside a WYSIWYG area is way more intuitive than IMCE.
Why not switching to media for the D7 version?

jec006 commentedWe agree completely that the ideas behind media are ideal for OpenPublish.
Unfortunately, currently - the active development branch - 2.x - has no stable release, and is a complete rearchitecture from the 1.x branch. So, in an effort to prevent instability, limit the amount of issues people have and provide a consistant upgrade path we chose to not include media for the time being. Hopefully in the future Media will be a more viable options.
Thanks for the suggestion, i hope this better explains our thought process in not including it.

gagarine commentedI understand, but anyway an upgrade path from IMCE (with image not attach to node) to media is almost impossible. So it will not be better to break stuff between D6 and the first stable D7 than again breaking it when you will change from IMCE to media?
I will suggest to keep the existing image field are they are and only using media for the image inside the body area. To keep compatibility for people than have content's image using IMCE an optional seperate feature can do the trick.
Can I keep it open as a feature request?
jec006 commentedYes, that is fine. Leaving it open will hopefully spark more input.
I think that we (meaning me) should also pursue some level of better support of embedding images in Wysiwygs or other uses that IMCE may be needed for. I think that if this is the major issue, supporting it without adding 5-9 modules for media would be a far better approach for right now. I think that when the time comes for media to be integrated that it should be used throughout the distro. Basically, if we are going to install something that big, then we need to actually use it and take advantage of all its features.

gagarine commentedYou certainly know than media x.2 use now the file field API. For example, the media browser work with preexisting normal file field out of the box.
I understand you don't want to make a big change if you feel close the a RC...
FYI I just tried on my openpublish installation to add a media field on the blog post content type and use the media browser in the WYSIWYG and As I say I can also reference old media. It works without any bad side (yet) and make me looking forward for a 2.x using media.

jec006 commentedThat's awesome to hear - that was exactly our hope with our current approach - that when media is ready, we can integrate it without having issues with the old data.
jpstrikesback commentedAny updates on this front? I'm going to start incorporating Media into my copy of alpha 6, if there will be features coming shortly with this in, I'll hold off.
jec006 commentedI would not expect a release of Openpublish with Media module integration any time soon.
jpstrikesback commentedThanks for the quick detail!
jec006 commentedSure, sorry its not the news you were hoping for

rerooting commentedWe plan on building out a feature for this specifically for some of our projects. The new (D7) OP is looking wonderful, though IMCE is something we aren't keen on either. We have found media to be stable enough on other projects to use heavily - especially given the advantage of views integration.
One will want to use features override with this feature once we release it to disable IMCE integration, and even allow uninstalling IMCE.
This would really be a 'from scratch' approach and it would probably not be a good solution for a production publishing site to switch from IMCE to media entirely until they have figured out and tested a migration path for everything.

jpstrikesback commented@rerooting I would love to try it out when you've released it, thanks for spearheading!
jec006 commentedThat sounds like an excellent compromise, look forward to seeing what you come up with.
rerooting commentedLooking into this a bit more!
http://drupal.org/project/media_embedded is a good route to take.
I have actually gotten sidetracked into building a project out entirely custom for a client that does much of what OP does and more. I hope to come back around and do this fairly soon though! Unfortunately I don't have any clients who explicitly want to use Open Publish right now.
