I apologise if I've missed some functionality in this module that perhaps does what I'm looking for.

Basically, I was wondering if it's possible to set up this module to work like gdriving did.

If not would it be better to port gdriving or to set up similar functionality in getdirections?

Gdriving has a very different logic to Getdirections and its methods would not integrate easily, but Gdriving could and should be ported to Drupal 7, perhaps you can ask the maintainer to consider it?
