Have made the database changes indicated under another issue, and that enabled me to work per the tutorial with CCK node types. However, despite both the rsssource and rssnews having default attributes of not being promoted to the front page, everything seems to be promoted. Any suggestions?

Be sure to have the leech settings right when you add a feed. There is a dropdown that controls how many feed items on a feed should be promoted.
