I've checked the thumbnail listed in the metadata for these Vimeo videos, and those image URLs do not have black images, so this one is really stumping me. This issue does not occur with all videos, but enough to be utterly confusing. I have not had time to try this with a sample set of media from another service (such as YouTube).
Some videos that work:
http://vimeo.com/34134700
http://vimeo.com/33992907
http://vimeo.com/33991284
Videos that have black thumbnail images:
http://vimeo.com/33976530
http://vimeo.com/33976483
http://vimeo.com/33976416
I'll follow-up with this if we find a solution.

jec006 commentedHi,
So i was trying to reproduce this, but I'm having trouble getting those videos to show blank thumbnails.
However, I have one thought - did you upload those videos fairly soon before embedding them? I'm wondering if maybe vimeo hadn't generated the thumbnails yet?

chadhester commentedHi, sorry for the delay.
That appears to be the issue! Thanks! Our client had, indeed, uploaded several videos and we very shortly thereafter linked to them. I had to:
1. Clear both the existing thumbnails and their resized "image style" counterparts (I simply did this in the filesystem for testing purposes).
2. Flush the cache (broken images displayed).
3. Re-save the node (to regenerate the thumbnail).
4. Flush the cache.
I hope this helps anyone else that runs into this issue.
