I have created a couple of taxonomy terms for my FAQ questions, but am finding that the dreaded "Subscribe to RSS" icon and link appears upon them.

It isn't appearing anywhere else in the site or on the FAQ answer pages, so would anyone happen to know where it's coming from and how to remove it without resorting to a display-none style?

That sounds the RSS feed icon on the taxonomy term pages themselves. Those pages are created by Drupal core and not the FAQ module. I'm not a themer, but there's probably some function you can override to stop their display. Ask for support on IRC or in the forums. I'm afraid we can't help you here.
