Written Permissions - PLEASE HELP

I been trying to install Drupal 5.0 for the past few days now. I have hit a wall. Can anyone help?
This is what I've done so far:
Download/Installed MySql
Downloaded Drupal 5.0
Unzipped and transferred to my web server (FTP)
When I type in the address, I get an error message stating "The Drupal installer requires write permissions to ./sites/default/settings.php during the installation process."
How can I solve this problem? Would I need to go back and manually change the settings.php page? I thought with the new version, it's changes automatically.
Thanks!!

Change ur setting permission CHMOD 777
Go to ur ftp/cpanel with ur username -password and change file permission ur file settings.php to CHMOD 777 and refresh ur browser ...
voila ur see ur installation succesfully
after ur installation success go back ur settings.php to CHMOD 755 for security reason !
