Is there any initiatives to upgrade this to Drupal 7?

Currently there is not - Its possible that in the future and OpenPublish becomes more mature we would want to provide this as an app, but I'm unsure right now. I'm open to any patches though :)

I'd actually reccomend integration with the media module, among other things. PDF module is a great example of where this could go - DC is a lot more user friendly to set up than pdf.js! Esp. since OP 7.x is using the media module for embedded media anyways... :)
