Can't disable relation_select

In pursuing this issue, I removed all (three) relation_select fields (and disabled a feature which depended on those fields), cleared cache and then tried to disable relation_select:

drush dis relation_select
relation_select is a required module and can't be disabled.

After much screwing around, I ended up setting relation_select's status flag to 0 in the db (with no evident ill effects).
