There should be a hook for modules to register themselves as source modules for LT, so that extension source modules can be written.

Done. In -dev. New release coming with this in it.

Modules can now register themselves as source modules for LT using this hook:

/**
 * Register this module as a source module for Location Taxonomize
 */
function hook_location_taxonomize_source() {
  return array(
   '<source_module_shortname>' => '<Module Human Readable Name>', 
  );
}
