Versioning Support

One of my site contributors asked me to put in a request for versioning support.
It's automatic right now to upload a new file and put it right next to the one you have so you have filea.zip and fileb.zip that's not the need.
But It would sure be nice If I could bring in fileb.zip to replace filea.zip and all of the nodes which had been linked to filea.zip would silently switch to fileb.zip.

Hmmm, I think that makes sense the way I worded it.
IOW he's looking for a way to replace an existing file with a new version without breaking or having to rebuild attachment to nodes.

Is that possible.
