That is a very generic error message that can be caused by a number of things:

It is most likely not because of code in Mass Contact, but if you think it is, you will need to provide a lot more information than what you have provided, like log messages, what you were doing at the time you got the error, which mail related modules you have installed, how you have any mail modules configured, etc., etc., etc.
