It's counterintuitive to add a "File" field when what we really want to do is embed something from somewhere else. Can we please have a new field type for Embedded media fields?

Dearie me...
It looks like the reason this has not been advanced is the snarl of dependencies between Drupal core and the Media monstrosity.
I've been drilling on this problem for hours now trying to figure out how to avoid using "file" as the 'Type of Data to Store' when clearly we are storing a string of text.
Since there's no way to quickly introduce a new file type, it would be *really* helpful for the readme or the on screen help to gently route admins through the nightmare.
Since I don't know the answer (yet) I'm afaird I can't offer these instructions myself.
If anyone can spare a moment to shed a bit of light, that would be hugely appreciated.
