The best way to learn it is, making your hands dirty with it.
And try drupal.org/documentation, nodeone.se screencasts and anything you can find ;)
About forums: you can make a good use of it if you use it correctly. Search the forum very well and most likely that you are not the only one with that question.

My personal opinion is that I found the Lynda.com training videos really helpful for basics, though that did cost. Otherwise, like Ayesh, I found that just installing it and having a good play around is the probably the best way to learn, using Google (or other search engines) to find answers.
For example, I just searched "how do I install Drupal" and the top search result tells you all you need to know.. http://drupal.org/documentation/install

Although I agree with the above statements about just using it, I have found the tutorials on these sites to be exceptional:

A list of some of the Drupal sites I have designed and/or developed can be viewed at motioncity.com
Another good site is Build-A-Module
I agree that the best way to learn is to set up a Drupal site, roll up your sleeves noodle around.
I learned SO much from MustardSeed.com and really recommend this as a free source of information. (It doesn't hurt to send the author's of these free resources a thank you.)
I have done the Lynda.com Drupal 7 Essentials and found them to be an excellent starting point, especially for learning how the interface works. If you manage your time you can go through all the videos and do the work in a month. (Lynda.com charges $25/month for unlimited access).
Another really outstanding resource is Chris Shattuck's http://buildamodule.com/ This will take you into the theming and programming side of Drupal and would be the next level after you are comfortable with the Lynda.com techniques. This site has several free videos but to get access to everything it is $29/month. Again, if you use good time management you can do some of the sections in a month and the content is really, really worth while.
I spent years using Google (the free resources) to teach myself Drupal, and only wish I had done the Lynda.com and BuildAModule.com a long time ago.
I spent years using Google
Totally agree, I experienced the exact same thing

I've been recommending the O'Reilly title "Using Drupal" to colleagues; it's got enough examples in tutorial fashion in it to really get you started. More of a site-builder's book than a module coder's.
