When I attempt to link to an existing piece of content using the format [[my-node-title]] for an existing piece of content, the link always redirects to create a new node instead of linking to the existing node. I have also tried to use [[My Node Title]] which doesn't seem to work either.

Am I doing something wrong?

I ran across your post looking for info on specifying the input format (mine's only working in full HTML, not filtered), but I can tell you that you need to look at the Freelinking settings (admin>config>freelinking) to change the behavior of each plugin there. Also make sure that Wikitools (admin>config>wikitools) doesn't have the "hijack" box checked.
