It has been quite some time since I started using Drupal (from release of 4.7). From that point, the thing that I liked about Drupal is the node architecture.
I also wondered, as to why Comment was kept as a different element, rather than just another node. Was it for sake of simplicity or better integration with the rest of the content types? The issue haunted back at me, when I was helping around a little bit in the development of UIEForum module. (Trust me, I did not do much. Just poking around a bit and helping the serious developers). As you know, the core forum module, treats all the posts that were made as reply to the thread starter as comment. In this case, it would have been easier to deal with the forum if comment were a node.
Even in general - in terms of flexibility - in my opinion, Comments should be a node like other content and must be differentiated with the 'node type' property.
What are your thoughts on this? Is it worth the effort? Would it break too many other things if we move in this direction?
Comments
long history
This is an old question that has been discussed many times. The basic concern is the performance of nodes which are relatively slow compared to comments.
You can see http://drupal.org/project/nodecomment nodecomment module which does comments as nodes for Drupal5 and that is probably the best way to get this done and move the idea forward. If it works well for you then you can give that feedback.
