At the moment the number of comments are only fetched via javascript.

If there is a way to query the number of comments for a post, it would be nice to prepopulate the $node->comment_count variable server side.

Any ideas on this?

The latest version of the code always for disqus hooks to be fired this can then be used to call a menu callback and make a request to the disqus api and the values can then be stored server side.
