I've tried and tried to make the sidebars and main content less wide - by modifying the em widths within the style.css. But each time that I change the widths, the left sidebar no longer floats to the left, but ends up at the bottom of the page, below the main.

Any hints on what I'm doing wrong?

I'd suggest to have a look at the readme.txt in there I have tried to explain in detail how the layout is built and should give you a good base to do your modifications.
