Have you ever considered moving the "update node/path" part to a separate module?
It would be easier and structured. Helping maintain it would also be easier for people.

It's essential to this project, adding another dependency is not my preference and there's unlikely to be a benefit to any other modules for the use of the new module, but that's giving this suggesting all of a few seconds of thought. At the moment I can't see it being helpful, but I'll keep it in mind.

just for info. i do not meant a separate project i meant as a submodule of filefield paths
