Is there potentially going to be a drupal 7 version of this, or is there a similar module for drupal 7?

There is the editablefields module, but it doesn't provide a modal option.

It'd depend on a Drupal 7 port of Modal Frame API. See Port modalframe API to Drupal 7 and test the patch in #26.
