Issue Summary
I have a version of this for Drupal Commerce in a sandbox: http://drupal.org/sandbox/gilgabar/1425322. It works well for me so far, but could use some testing to make sure it meets the needs of other folks as well.

I'll file an issue in your sandbox issue queue with some concerns I have looking at the code.
