Function to assign lat/lon

Hi,

I've written an add-on module for Image that grabs the lat/lon info from the Exif tags.
Could you help me out by suggesting how I should best go about adding these two fields to the node and updating the necessary other info.
As far as I can tell, there is currently not a function that can be called remotely to do this.
