Ok. Obviously a simple module so pretty straightforward port. Attached the patch or you can also grab the code at https://github.com/markwk/compete

Will the port to 7 be placed on Drupal.org for automatic update checks?

Not sure. I'd be happy to maintain this simple module, but you may need to ask the current maintainer to give me access to commit. Not sure. Pretty simple code so perhaps you can use the github version.
