It would be really neat if, as part of the add content and add/edit pane configuration screen it would show a live preview of the content. This would probably require some sort of AJAX callback to get the markup and likely an iFrame container to render it, but would be a neat way to WYSIWYG the layout/content experience.

While the preview functionality has been broken for a little while, it should be fixed, and it seems to me like this functionality would be mostly redundant in that case?

If you don't need a context, then you can already do this with preview, and if you do need a context, then what you describe would quickly turn into the preview.

This is to have individual panes have previews during the add dialog.

This is something that's currently in Panopoly.

I am going to close this issue since (a) I already added it to Panopoly and (b) this is a lot harder problem than I originally thought and might not be helpful for a more general tool like Panels.
