Hi guys
Am not very technically versed, and i have a few questions about hosting.
1. Is there any technical reason why USA hosting is way much cheaper than UK hosting
2. Any technical disadvantages of hosting a UK site out side of the UK?
Thank you

1. The exchange rate (well that and the sheer amount of competition in the US). £1 can now buy you an entire house in certain parts of the US, we did this to try and stop the Yanks from coming over here and well, speaking as a Londoner - it seems to have worked? Well done the Bank of England!
2. Not particularly... It's not like the distance will ever be a problem? Mind you if your site goes down during the daytime here don't forget it'll be in the middle of the night over there and so you might not get anything done about it until later on... Obviously with larger companies that part won't matter though?

geographic search engines
I know that Google looks at a site's IP address to determine the physical location of the server, and uses this information to help decide what geographic search engine the site should appear in (google.co.uk, google.ie, google.com etc). However google also takes into account whether a site is a geographic-specific domain like .co.uk, but I'm not sure what weight they carry in comparison to the physical server location.
I'm in the process of moving all our Irish websites from an American server to a (more expensive) Irish one for just that reason, even the ones with .ie domains.

Hopping to the US from the UK
I used to take advantage of cheap hosting in the States but despite the speed of the links at the data centres on the other side of the Pond, the number of network hops gave the perception that the sites were slow. Prices have dropped in the UK over the last year or two, not to the level that you'll find in the US as I'm sure that you're seeing, but for myself they've dropped to a point that makes it reasonable to host in the UK.
Get in touch if you would like more info. There's a contact me link on my website.
Cheers,
Garan.

Thanks to you all
The reason I asked is because I have been using US based hosts as well for a while
my site is a user driven site, with loads of mp3, videos and images, so i needed a huge/less expensive host package. There are loads to chooose from in the US. However I have been told to consider a VPS and leave shared hosting since my site has recently been demanding about 15Gb or so of storage and about 30/40 Gb of bandwidth moonthly.
Now comapring UK and USA VPS hosting costs, wow, there is a lot of difference.
a US$50 vps in will cost me £50, now that is some big difference
Any less expensive VPS in the UK
thanks
