I'm a noobee to Drupal, and CMS in general for that matter. I have Drupal installed, as well as Joomla, etc. Just playing around with both. I've read that Drupal is designed for community-driven, social networking, myspace/facebook-type sites. What I would like to know is what specific things/features/architectural design make this so? This is not meant as a Drupal vs Joomla thread. I'd just like to know what things make Drupal so good for this?

Last week I tangentially hit a site call "Team Sugar" during a search for something. I noticed it was drupal based, and was kind of astounded to find that it was a social network for women with nearly 30k people online (not the total userbase, but online at the time).

Drupal isn't really "designed for" anything besides building websites. People use it for single person blogs, newspapers, SN sites, etc. It's like saying Legos are designed for building toy cars.

That said, Drupal does have a lot of contrib modules that work together for making SN sites. A lot of them can be found here but it's better to read the whole list because not everything is categorized correctly. You might also want to check out http://groups.drupal.org/social-networking-sites .

As the other commenter mentioned, the *Sugar sites are an awesome example of Drupal as SN. I forgot which of them he linked you to, but there are a series of sites by them and well worth the look.

Hi Michelle... the following thread makes it sound like ***compared to joomla*** Drupal is ***better-designed*** for social networking-type sites. That's what I meant by "designed" and I just wondered what people here thought, and, if true, what ***things*** make Drupal better for such uses.

I just peeked at the post, but it looks like it might be worth further reading when I have time.

I've never used Joomla so I can't compare, but I know that Drupal can build very nice SN sites. That page of modules I gave you would be the "things" I guess. There's a lot of SN shaped Legos in the bunch.

Just require a small help. I have seen many social networking sites ask you to invite your friends to join and they just need you to login to google, yahoo or msn through a small box on their site, an email is automatically sent to all your address book members inviting them to join. How does this work ?
