My website is online for about a year. I would like to do some updates and redesigning so I took it to localhost (download folders via FTP and my DB with phpmyadmin). I get my homepage up and running on localhost but all my links direct to the online site. when trying to log in I get "The requested URL /sites/**** was not found on this server".

There are two things you can try. One would be searching your DB export before importing it locally for references to your public website. You can just search and replace "http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/" with "/". The second thing you could try is explicitly setting your domain url in the settings.php file. Look for the $base_url line.
