I've been trying to install Drupal 7 on my cPanel site but I have had problems as it appears that the hosting provider only supports mysql 4.x whereas Drupal v7 requires mysql 5.x.
I can install Drupal v6 - but is this likely to be discontinued in a short time? I have no knowledge of when or if my provider will support mysql v 5.x but would appreciate some thoughts about the likely life expectancy of Drupal v6 - as otherwise I might have to look at another solution.

d6 will be supported until d8 is released (likely some time away). However, your bigger problem is really why a hosting provider is using a database release that is nearly SEVEN YEARS OLD! I would RUN, not walk but RUN, to a new hosting provider.

Thanks for this update. The hosting is very inexpensive and has been thus far _very_ reliable. I don't know why they are not supporting mysql 5.x but as I get 20Gb of storage and an immense traffic limit each month I have to say that it is not a point I am keen to stress over. In the past they have updated rather too quickly for some applications and this has caused problems with, for instance, wikitikitavi that I used to use.
Ho Hum - at least I can carry on with Drupal 6 rather than having to get to grips with Joomla...

Insecure
So would I.
I'm not surprised--they apparently don't have a budget for updating their servers in fact. Note here http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/ that your MySQL version is unsupported and has been so for years. That means any security holes found in the past, oh, 7 years, are just sitting there. That means your site is insecure.
Seven years is not called quick. :)

D6 will be around for at least another 18 months. When it becomes discontinued, all that means is that Drupal.org will drop support for the platform. Your site might still work without issues for many years to come.
On the host, perhaps you can ask them when they intend to upgrade the servers. As long as it happens soon-ish, you should be able to upgrade your D6 site to D7 in the near future, before D8 comes out.
Traffic limit is meaningless.
Traffic limit is meaningless. Cheap hosts give immense limited / unlimited then make sure you do not use it by throttling. Expensive hosts do not throttle, they just limited bw honestly, so their network should be faster. You will NEVER use this bandwidth, that is guaranteed.

The fact is, Drupal 6 contrib development is already stopping or has stopped for many modules.
I wouldn't advise anyone in March 2012 to start with Drupal 6. But hey, it's your choice.
