If the cardinality of the reference field is not set to unlimited, and the field is required too (so, the user must enter at least one reference) and you leave the field is blank, then the error message is only 'field is required.'. The label of the field is missing from the error message. If the cardinality is 2-10, then too.

There's a proposed patch for this on #2145483: Empty field title for multiple values text area field validation and this issue doesn't have much discussion, so even though that's a much newer issue I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of that.
