The Ajax module http://drupal.org/project/ajax can also AJAXify any Drupal forms. And from the module project page, the author is also looking for additional maintainers, maybe you can contribute your changes into the same module?

Yeah, there's also ajaxit, but it seems to be kinda abandoned.

Well, one basic difference is that this module here has only a 7.x version while AJAX only has a 6.x (no action in #755936: Port AJAX module to Drupal 7).
