I installed Gunmetal and the upper left hand side has this:

seems like there is an error, maybe because I am using Drupal 5.x?

Yes, the theme is compatible with Drupal 4.7.x. For Drupal 5.x, you'll have to upgrade the theme as instructed here: http://drupal.org/update/themes
Note that Drupal 5.x version will not be released unless major issue are fixed, and moreover, the theme isn't GPL licensed, and hence was removed from the cvs. It might come back whenever there's some solution to host non-GPL theme.
