When you don't choose a required taxonomy, you get this overzealous error message:

An illegal choice has been detected. Please contact the site administrator.

instead of being told to choose a taxonomy.

created a new Content Type, with a similar "Term reference," and got the same error ... and again creating a taxonomy from scratch... seems like a widespread problem not related to this module?

I concur that this seems a generic issue not related to specific modules - this bug report possibly needs to be assigned to drupal core fields/taxonomy

If radio buttons are being used to select the taxonomy in the content form and the core drupal version is 7.12 or less then this is almost definitely a bug in drupal core(includes/form.inc) I updated to the current dev version of drupal 7 and the problem has been patched.

I haven't seen this in a while & think the more recent drupal version and/or we're not encountering the bug after other clean-up has solved this minor issue.
