Problem/Motivation
In the standard install profile it might be useful to have Basic pages create their own menu items (into Main Menu) by default. This seems to be the expected behavior, and additionally would demonstrate to users how the confusing Menu UI on nodes should be used. Here is an example of a participant from the Google Usability study struggling with the "node orphanage" problem and wondering why pages weren't listed under "Navigation" automatically:

Proposed resolution
Check the box for "Provide a menu link" and select "Main menu" as Parent item by default. We'll also need to decide if we want to expand the existing content type configuration UI so site admins can set menu link default behaviors on any content type.

webchickLove this idea. Ideally, making it configurable per-content type makes sense.

yoroy commentedGreat idea. Expected behavior as you say + sets newbies up for discovering how content and menu items relate.
