an author created a blog post,
published it,
copied the URL from the address-box,
Shared it a link among viewers.

After a day or two she needed to change the post's title,
but the URL of the post changed as well !
So, all the links she shared over the web still pointed to the previous URL, which has no target anymore.

how do i prevent the URL from changing after publishing?

Go to pathauto's settings page (admin/build/path/pathauto) and change its update action to either "Do nothing. Leave the old alias intact." or "reate a new alias. Leave the existing alias functioning." My guess is the 3rd update option is selected.

the 3rd option was set.

You could also probably install the Redirect module to support when URL aliases change so you can always use the most "current" aliases.
