Hiya guys,

Thanks for all the positive feedback and suggestions from people using the front_page.module.

Please note that I have "upgraded" the module so you can now automatically REDIRECT logged in users to a specific page/path.

It's very simple to use and there are extra options now on the ADMINISTER - SETTINGS - FRONT_PAGE configuration that allows you to implement a REDIRECT.

Click here to download the new module from the CVS Repository:

http://cvs.drupal.org/viewcvs/drupal/contributions/modules/front/

Or click here to start download the full Tar/zip file with readme.txt and installation instructions:

http://drupal.org/files/projects/front-cvs.tar.gz

There are only a few line changes between the old and current version...but..am a newbie so haven't got a clue how to represent that properly as a patch or diff thing.

Things to do...I am looking into maybe setting up an automatic REDIRECT based on User Roles. So you can automatically REDIRECT drummers to the drummers section...guitarists to the guitarists section etc. if you know what I mean...

Anyway...I hope the new REDIRECT function is of use....

Jason

How about a simple option to only have a single, standardized frontpage that shows to all users, regardless of whether they're logged in? I have a frontpage that has sort of teasers to different articles and a nice graphic, and as articles change I manually update that page.

As your module stands, I'd have to modify both the anonymous and authenticated user versions. So I hacked your hack. I just tweaked the last section, so that if the user is anonymous, *or* if the "logged-in user" version of the frontpage is empty, then it shows the anonymous front page. That way I can just leave the second page blank and all users see the same front page.

This might be better implemented as an explicit option, rather than an implicit effect, though, so maybe a "use this page for all users" checkbox next to the anonymous user page edit box would be in order?

Hi Ds.

Thanks for the feedback...and point taken.

Although...I'm not sure I understand why someone would use the front_page.module to do what you mentioned...why not just use the mission or point to a custom page..using the default home page field under ADMINISTER - SETTINGS? (I think this drupal.org site just uses the mission for it's front page).

Which is what I used to use to determine what goes on the home page until I thought about having a different one for not-logged in and logged in users. Hence the reason I hacked into the old front module.
Correct me if I'm wrong...if anonymous users can access the same content as logged in users, logic would suggest that there is no need for a front_page type thing.

If I'm wrong and am missing something..please let me know....I can put in a "use this page for all users" checkbox, but, I think it might be better to advise people they don't need another module and should use the mission/existing drupal features instead.

why not just use the mission or point to a custom page

Hm. Can I point to a custom page that's not themed? And that is completely editable through the interface? I wanted something that was absolutely controlled (no theme, no boxes, just the HTML I put in it), but that could also be modified by editors (so it's in the DB, not just a file that someone has to replace). For that, I used the old Front.module and it worked just fine...

But you know, maybe I see what you're saying about "Mission" -- you think the whole big box at the top of the drupal.org front page is just a reallyi fancy mission, and so it's only displayed on the front page anyway? I might refactor my site to use that instead. It's an idea. But still, there are times you want everyone to get some "flashy" sort of intro page (w/out using flash, that is :) ).

point taken re: full/themed front page. Forgot about that.

before I plucked up the courage to hack the front module I used to use the mission with a custom page (with flash objects linked using html) set as the default home page under ADMINISTER - SETTINGS

That was okay for a while..but when it started getting into logged in/not logged in users and switching off/on blocks and stuff for the front page (using the path option under ADMINISTER - BLOCKS) it started getting a bit tricky, so it was actually easier for me to hack the front.module.

Will look into the mission and summary module for more detail to make sure I'm not duplicating stuff and have a stab at inserting the checkbox thing you mentioned..i.e. "make the same for anon users" .

Hi David,

Have u tried the summary.module?

From what I can see, it might automate what you're doing with your home page without the need for the front_page.module

http://drupal.org/project/summary

Let me know.

Have u tried the summary.module?

I just checked that out, and it's got potential, but no, it's not quite what I want. here's the site: http://www.preserveatwynmar.org . The idea was to have something clean and simple, and with quick links to the three "most important" recent stories. I haven't found a way to build this automagically (granted, I haven't looked too closely, either). I could probably use path arguments to turn off the menu and blocks for my "front" page node, and wrap around some standard links / images, but I'm not sure of any easy way to do it within the general drupal framework.

If I could force a single page into a totally different theme, then I could do all the layout in that theme and somehow configure that page to only show the first 3 or 4 story summaries. But doing it manually also gives me some flexibility, to put additional emphasis on stories as needed, perhaps a "random image" block, etc. So the front.module solution was really pretty ideal (and now, with the "same page for everyone" bit that I hacked in, yours as well).

It works great and does exactly what I wanted it to do. Thanks for taking the time to implement the changes.

glad it's of use jason.

Quick question...what version of drupal are you using...?

I'm using 4.5.0 and am not sure how to tell if front_page.module will work with drupal CVS or Drupal 4.5.1 without installing them and trying it out.

Cheers

I'm using 4.5.1. Though, from what I understand, no major changes were made to the core structure that would affect your module.
