As per the subject title really. The front page displays news articles with them appearing at the top based on posted date, newest at the top. However, is it possible to change the display listing so that they display based on 'updated/edited date' with newest at the top?

You could use Views to override the front page. It will allow you to adjust how your nodes are sorted.

When you install the module, it comes with a view called "Front page". You would just have to activate it and modify the sorting criteria.
