Would like to be able to choose from two options:
1) A container for each group and a sub-forum in it (current)
2) Choose existing container in which each group will have a sub-forum

Using admin/content/forum, you can place forums and containers inside any other containers you like. Are you saying you'd like to set a default where each new group gets put?

I believe that's what was intended. I'm setting the priority to minor.

Got this done. There are a couple of restrictions.

-First, whether the group has it's own container for forums or has it's forum in a container of your choosing depends on the status of an admin setting at the time of group creation. I've made no provisions for back-converting old groups. It would be a pain in the ... neck. However, by toggling the setting, you can create some groups with forums in a central location and other groups with their own containers.

-Second, I have also added the ability to specify the name of the default name of the default forum, but this is not usable if you place the forum in a container you've chosen as all groups would have forums of the same name in the same container. I therefore use the group name (node title) as the forum name in the case where the forum is placed inside the container you chose.

-Third, as containers can only be added to other containers (so far as group managers are concerned), each group will only have one forum. The site admin can add more, but you may recall that the group owner can only create FORUMS inside their container. With that container taken away, they can only edit their one forum.

I think that's it. As soon as (most of) the rest of the issue queue is taken care of, please test this further. It seems to work fine for me, though.

Deleting a group does still delete the forum.
