I have read many posts on how this may or may not work with Pathauto.

I personally have been unable to get the two to work together.

I was hoping you could offer official advice on how to configure these to mass update the urls with redirects.

We already have an issue to improve the documentation in #1525554: Provide instructions in the README.txt.

I find the usage of the module straight forward. You just need to install it and read the preferences page. Consider using Drupal Answers to ask support questions, you'll get a better response there.
