Re-Compute Utility?

Could a utility possibly be provided to re-compute (or initially compute) values for this field when it is created or changed? It can be quite a lot of work to manually go through and save each node the field appears on. The cron feature suggested elsewhere would be acceptable as an alternative, but in my case, the value only changes if the field definition changes (or the node is edited).
