Users can create stories while we have not allowed them / Comments spam also coming a lot

gdtechindia - May 26, 2007 - 05:36

I have noticed a big issue on three Drupal websites we are managing.

Some people sign up as users and submit content which is Spam.

I have set up the permissions as follows.

For Authenticated User

create stories Not Allowed
Edit Own Stories Not Allowed

With these both not allowed, they are still able to create new stories.

In addition, there is lot of comment spam on some of websites as well. Can someone suggest something to help us.

Rebuild node permissions and see if that helps (Administer- > Post Settings ->Rebuild Node Permissions )

Alternatively, spam.module

Alternatively, the spam.module may be of use too. It's a bayesian filter, which once trained is pretty effective. Unlike Akismet, it doesn't need any external service (and it's free to use, even if you're commercial).

I used to use spam.module on my blog, and it stood up to several weeks of very concerted spam attacks. I'd say it probably caught 99% of spam, and marked a handful of non-spam comments incorrectly. So far, Akismet's blocked a handful of spams, but has made no false positives. It's missed some broken messages (which I assume are from broken 'bots), but it's doing pretty well.

Out of curiosity, are you

Out of curiosity, are you using organic groups? Sometimes it makes things go a wee bit screwy permissions wise...
