A useful example would be a field widget, e.g. an alternative selector for noderef fields.

We try to stay with examples that are completely core, but I certainly support improving the widget examples. Maybe you could say more about what you think is inadequate about the existing widgets in the field example...

My thought was more to have a simpler code example where you didn't have to identify what pieces were for the field vs widget vs formatter.

The Field Permission Example is pretty much the bare-minimum for implementing a field, with the least code. Between that one and the Field Example there's plenty to get you started.

If you have something more specific in mind, give a shout.
