I just noticed that ALL my quote descriptions and authors are now mismatched, and I have no idea why.

There have been no database errors or other module issues that I recall seeing.

I don't know exactly when this happened, but sometime during or shortly after the process of migrating an existing Drupal 4.7 site to 5.1.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

I didn't migrate from 4.7, so I haven't seen this. I can't really see anything in the code that would cause this. Is it possible that the node numbers (nids) got changed by the upgrade?
