"handle file by extension" hook

it would be nice to have a hook that one could use to develop different ways to handle different file types. for example, i could have all attached images automatically resized into a thumbnail, while all attached mp3s would be shown in a little flash mp3 player.

of course, this would all be implemented by other modules (which would "hook" onto the attachment module), and all i'm asking is for such a hook.
